FAST (Festival of Australian Student Theatre) The Festival of Australian Student Theatre (FAST) is a Vena Cava Productions* initiative in association with LaBoite Theatre Company and QUT Creative Industries. FAST, to be launched in 2010, seeks to bring together the nation's Student Theatre Companies, and create a festival. The festival's aim is to showcase the incredible talent emerging through these companies. It will allow for national networking, creating opportunities for the growth of the Australian Student Theatre and new connections to industry. Preparations for FAST will begin with a conference, to be held in August 2009 at La Boite Theatre Company, Brisbane. The aim of the conference is to form a planning committee and produce a document from which the festival can be planned for a launch in 2010. The conference is also a preliminary step in establishing these connections between Student Theatre Companies from across Australia and to determine a consensus on what we, as a national Student Theatre body, would like to see in this festival. WHO: Representatives from university arts departments and Student Theatre Companies/Societies around Australia are invited to attend and contribute. WHAT: The two days of the conference will include discussions under specific topics towards how we, as representatives of Student Theatre around Asutralia, envisage the festival. (Vision, Mission, Programming criteria etc). We will also form a committee comprised of representatives from each state and other required festival committee positions. WHEN: Friday 21st-Saturday22nd August 2009, 1pm-5pm each day with entertainment each night. WHERE: The conference will be held at La Boite Theatre Company, Roundhouse Theatre, 6-8 Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove Urban Village, Brisbane QLD, Australia 4059. HOW: There are three ways you can contribute: 1) We organise for you to travel to LaBoite to attend the conference in person (travel would be at your expense, however we can provide transfers, food and accomodation). 2) You can collate your Student Theatre Company's/fellow student's ideas to have your contribution and send them for inclusion via email. 3) We can organise for you to be involved in the planning conference via video conferencing (Skype). Universities have always been tremendously fertile grounds for great theatre and new practises, and the prospect of student theatre companies from around the nation coming together to share work and ideas can only mean a healthier and more exciting professional theatre environment in the future. And, to be honest, it also sounds like a whole lot of un. Vena Cava's initiative should be supported by student organisations from all campuses.
