Established in 1975 as a specialist centre for drama
and directing courses the Flinders Drama Centre has a history of
producing graduates that have made, and continue to make, a significant
contribution to the entertainment industry both nationally and
internationally.
Students learn professional skills in theatre &
performance, acting for screen and cabaret. Students are encouraged to
explore post-modern performance techniques, physical theatre,
intercultural performance, and the interface between live performance
and multimedia. As well as performance skill, students develop skills in
creating, producing, and marketing their own work.
Refurbished in 2000, the centre now includes
television and video production studios, expanding the course to include
specific classes in acting for film and television and a commitment to
the creation of live performances using new technologies.
The Drama Centre features a number of teaching and
performance spaces - including the 425-seat Matthew Flinders Theatre,
and dance and voice training studios. In 2000 the drama centre built a
fully functioning, three-camera television studio and a ‘black-box"
studio, designed to accommodate the specialised equipment that allows
computer-controlled visual projections to be incorporated into live
performance.
In the last seventeen years the Drama Centre has also
developed a number of cross-cultural programmes in Asia and other areas
of the world. Artists from the Philippines, Japan, Korea and Iran have
joined the Flinders staff as visiting lecturers and Flinders students
have been invited to take part in performance projects in Okinawa,
Seoul, Mindanao, Shanghai and Teheran.
The Centre is equipped not only as a teaching
facility, but also as a research centre for visiting artists interested
in integrating live performance and new technologies. The presence of
leading professional artists in the Centre provides a vibrant and
stimulating environment for undergraduate and postgraduate students. |
