The acting course offers a strong focus on preparing graduates for screen roles as well as traditional conservatoire actor training for the stage. Graduates include AFI award winner Gyton Grantley, actor turned director Wayne Blair, and Helpmann Award nominee James Stewart. Newcomers Joshua Helman and Kathryn Beck will appear in major TV series’ 'The Pacific' and 'East of Everything' during 2009.
Contemporary drama and performance are evolving to incorporate technology, cross disciplinary practice, experimentation and commercialisation. Performance making at QUT is forward thinking, incorporating live and mediated performance, physical theatre, applied performance and innovative and experimental processes.
QUT is known nationally for its undergraduate programs in applied drama and drama education, and for higher degree research opportunities in performance studies. Graduates work as directors, performers, producers, playwrights, arts administrators, secondary school teachers, community artists, youth arts workers, and in the development of innovative performing arts practice.
This course incorporates cutting-edge approaches to devising, directing and designing live performance. You will be encouraged to explore new performance forms that incorporate technology, new media, film and installation.
You will develop transferable skills such as leadership and collaboration, as well as presentational skills including vocal technique and command of a space – skills which prepare you for the workforce in many careers.
You can choose a pathway which prepares you for postgraduate study in drama education or for research in areas such as applied performance, performance innovation, and creative practice.
Graduates work as directors, performers, producers, playwrights, arts administrators, community artists and youth arts workers. Some use their applied theatre skills in corporate training settings. Many are self-employed and undertake project work in a variety of these areas.
